Closed-loop recycling means taking a material from a used product and processing it so it becomes the same kind of product again, preserving the material’s quality and value. This is the essence of primary recycling. For example, scrap aluminum is melted and formed into new aluminum cans, and glass bottles are melted and made into new bottles. The goal is to keep the material in the same product stream.

Other options don’t fit this idea. Mass burn is incineration with energy recovery, not recycling. Open-loop or secondary recycling recovers materials but converts them into a different, often lower-value product (downcycling). A bioreactor landfill speeds up decomposition and gas production in a landfill, which is a waste disposal method, not a recycling process.
